What I learned from… ‘The Tutor’ by Courtney Psak
About the book
Letting her into your home was your first mistake…
Rose is a dedicated wife and mother to her husband Grant and her son James. Having recently moved to a grand mansion in Florida, Rose is keen for James to fit in with his new life and hires a tutor.
Isabel is young, smart and beautiful, and not only gets along with James, but she gets results.
But when Isabel starts to get too close for comfort, Rose can’t help but think that Isabel is looking for more than just tutoring.
Can Rose uncover who exactly she has let into her house, or will this lesson be deadly?
What I learned
The Tutor follows the Caldwell family as they navigate a web of secrets and lies.
The story follows Rose, an artist who hires a tutor, Isabel, to help her son James settle in after their move to an opulent estate in Florida. Isabel is young, intelligent, and charismatic—perhaps a bit too charismatic. While she bonds well with James, her keen interest in Rose’s husband, Grant, becomes increasingly concerning.
From the start, this book kept me guessing. Psak does a great job of hiding the twist till the very end – deploying it just was completely unexpected. The hints and tips scattered throughout the book led me to believe one thing, only to reveal something entirely different later on. I’m one of the people who didn’t get the ending of The Sixth Sense, so in a desperate attempt to make up for that, I’m always trying to stay one step ahead, but this twist stumped me.
The characters are well-developed and relatable, each with their own unique quirks and motivations. The settings are beautifully described, painting an idyllic picture of Palm Beach.
My initial impressions of the main characters were constantly challenged, and I found myself re-evaluating my opinions as the story progressed. The tension is relentless, the pacing is razor-sharp, and just when you think you’ve figured it out, Psak flips everything on its head once again. Every character has a secret, and every chapter tightens the noose, making this book an exhilarating read from start to finish.
